Overview

Proto-Elamite (also "Proto-Élamite," Fr. proto-élamite) is the oldest attested writing system of the Iranian plateau, in use from roughly 3100 to 2900 BCE (Early Bronze Age), a very brief span of barely two centuries. It is documented essentially by administrative and accounting clay tablets. History of the people

Proto-Elamite is the product of the early urbanization of southwestern Iran. At the end of the fourth millennium, Susa—occupied since the fifth millennium—underwent a phase of administrative growth (the so-called Susa III / Late Uruk period). The immediate context is that of the "Susian civilization" and, more broadly, of the expansion of the urban redistributive economies that also gave rise to proto-cuneiform at Uruk. The people who produced these tablets have no proper name attested by their own texts; by convention one speaks of the Proto-Elamite culture, projecting onto it the name of the land of "Elam" known from later Mesopotamian sources. The system's area of use, from Khuzestan to southeastern Iran (Kerman, Sistan) and to the north (central plateau), reveals a shared cultural and administrative horizon, often interpreted as an accounting koine rather than a unified state. History of the language

The language or languages encoded by Proto-Elamite are unknown. Since the script is undeciphered, neither its family nor its structure can be established. Three positions coexist: (1) the script records an early form of Elamite (a language isolate attested later, notably in Linear Elamite and then Cuneiform Elamite, from the third to the first millennium)—the most common hypothesis but unproven; (2) the script is, in its oldest stages, essentially logographic/ideographic and does not encode any particular language, serving as a transcultural accounting notation; (3) a minority and contested proposal by F. Desset (from 2018, reformulated ca. 2022) reclassifying the corpus as "Early Proto-Iranian," which has not achieved consensus. It should be noted that the decipherment associated with Desset's name concerns first and foremost LINEAR Elamite (based on silver beakers, work of 2018–2022); his thesis on Proto-Elamite is an argument of continuity/reclassification, not a phonetic reading of the Proto-Elamite tablets themselves. The script

Proto-Elamite is a mixed system, combining NUMERICAL SIGNS (noted N in the catalogues, e.g. N1, N14...) and TEXTUAL/ideographic signs (noted M, after Meriggi's catalogue, or with the conventional prefix). Support: small tablets of unbaked clay, often cushion-shaped. Instrument: numerical signs impressed with a rounded stylus (impressions), non-numerical signs incised with a pointed stylus. Direction of reading: left to right (the order of inscription differs from that of proto-cuneiform), which is a distinctive trait. The total number of distinct signs is high (on the order of a thousand), but a large share of the occurrences are numerical, and the list of non-numerical signs remains under development, complicated by numerous "hapaxes" (signs attested only once) reflecting local usages. The form of the signs is often more schematic/abstract than that of contemporary proto-cuneiform.

Sign system

Two broad classes are distinguished. (1) NUMERICAL AND METROLOGICAL signs: these are the best understood. Proto-Elamite employs several coexisting systems, each reserved for categories of objects: a DECIMAL system (factor 10, notably for counting certain goods and persons/animals)—a trait that clearly distinguishes it from proto-cuneiform; a SEXAGESIMAL system (factor 60); a BISEXAGESIMAL system (base 120); and CAPACITY systems (grain measures) with mixed factors. The CDLI indeed classifies numerical signs by system (D = decimal, S = sexagesimal, B = bisexagesimal, C = capacity). The sequence of base values largely overlaps that of proto-cuneiform, which made it possible to reconstruct the ratios between units through the analysis of totals. (2) TEXTUAL/ideographic signs: a few are reasonably identified by their pictography or by the accounting context (categories of animals, cereals, workers, designations of administrative entities), but the great majority (on the order of 80–90%, an estimate) remain not understood. The reference catalogue of forms is that of P. Meriggi (1970s), enriched and standardized since by the CDLI project (Mxxx/Nxx conventions). Unknown and not reconstructible. Since Proto-Elamite is undeciphered and its language unidentified, no sign possesses an established phonetic or syllabic value. Grammar — essentials

No grammar is reconstructible. The texts are brief administrative documents whose "syntax" is in reality an ACCOUNTING STRUCTURE, not the syntax of a natural language: a recurring order [responsible entity] + [object counted] + [quantity], with summation on the reverse. Neither morphology (affixes, agreement, case), nor word order in the linguistic sense, nor grammatical categories can be identified. The oldest stages appear purely ideographic, encoding no particular language. Any "grammatical rule" advanced for Proto-Elamite would be an invention. Any restitution must remain at the level of "administrative document: such-and-such entity, such-and-such good, such-and-such (probable) quantity," with reservations.

Pitfalls

Major pitfalls: (1) Believing that Proto-Elamite is "readable" as a language—FALSE: only the counting is understood. Decipherment history

The Susa tablets came to light from the French excavations (mission of Jacques de Morgan, from 1900 onward; publications of V. Scheil in the early twentieth century). The twentieth century saw progress above all on the NUMERICAL side: in the 1970s P. Meriggi established (La scrittura proto-elamica, 1971–1974, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei) a foundational sign catalogue. From the 1980s–1990s, P. Damerow and R. K. Englund (with the contribution of J. Friberg on the numerical systems) reconstructed the metrological systems and proposed contextual interpretations (e.g. seed distributions), notably in The Proto-Elamite Texts from Tepe Yahya (1989). R. K. Englund produced a reference assessment, "The State of Decipherment of Proto-Elamite" (2004, in S. Houston ed., The First Writing, Cambridge University Press, pp. 100–149). Since 2012, J. L. Dahl (Oxford) and the CDLI have revived the study through high-resolution digital imaging (RTI) and the online publication of the corpus, with calls for collaboration/crowdsourcing.
