Overview
Rongorongo is a system of signs carved on wood, discovered on Rapa Nui (Easter Island, southeastern South Pacific, a Chilean territory since 1888). It is the only graphic system native to Polynesia and one of the few potential independent "writing" inventions in the world. The surviving corpus is minuscule: some twenty to twenty-six commonly accepted objects (wooden tablets, several of them in toromiro, driftwood, or imported woods; a staff/scepter known as the "Santiago Staff"; reimiro pectoral ornaments; a "frigatebird/tangata manu" figure), of which only about half are authentic beyond all doubt. History of the language
The associated language is Rapanui, the only indigenous language of Easter Island, an Eastern Polynesian branch of the Austronesian family, close to Tahitian and Marquesan. The island was settled by Polynesian navigators (the dating is debated, around 1150-1290 CE according to recent archaeological data). Rongorongo is thought to have served to record (in part) an early form of this language. The demographic catastrophe of 1862-1863 (Peruvian slave raids deporting a large part of the population, including part of the literate elite), followed by epidemics (including smallpox) and emigration, reduced the population to roughly a hundred individuals (about 110 by 1872-1877) and broke the chain of transmission of the knowledge of the maori rongorongo. The script
Rongorongo consists of signs carved (incised, sometimes in slight relief) on wooden tablets (kohau rongorongo), often within shallow grooves/flutings that guide the lines. The engraving tool was an obsidian flake (mata) or a shark tooth. The signs measure about 1 cm high and are packed tightly along horizontal lines. The recognized direction of reading is REVERSE BOUSTROPHEDON: the reader begins at the lower left corner, reads a line from left to right, then rotates the object 180° to read the next line, so that every other line appears "upside down" relative to its neighbor.
